Vehicle Description 1969 Pontiac GTO Car History The first generation GTO was a muscle car of the 1960s and 1970s era.
Although there were earlier muscle cars, the Pontiac GTO is considered by some to have started the trend with all four domestic automakers offering a variety of competing models.
This is a true 1969 GTO we have here at Adventure Classics documented by the 242 Vin number and the Trim Tag which denotes it is a code 65 Antique Gold GTO and a black interior.
Also, it still has its original born-with YS code 400 cubic inch 350 horsepower engine.
Engine & Drivetrain The 400 cubic inch V8 is the original, numbers-matching YS powerplant that it came with that is nicely detailed and looks great, from the chrome air cleaner with dual snorkels, to the metallic turquoise engine enamel.
It also runs superbly with a nice V8 burble, plenty of torque, and no fussiness when it's cold.
It's equipped with power steering and brakes, air conditioning, plus a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission, so it's easy to drive, and even the exhaust system has just the right sound.
The chassis is also very detailed and painted and there's evidence everywhere you look that it's been lovingly maintained since 1969.
Finally, it sits exactly right on beautiful Rally II wheels and BF Goodrich Trans Am Radial tires.
Interior The black split bench front seat with the fold-down console is also how this car was delivered, matching rear seat, door panels are excellent, and the options list includes, black Pontiac steering wheel, hood tach, and AM/FM radio.
The gauges remain in excellent condition and the inside of the trunk is like new, with spatter paint on the floor, a correct mat, and a full size spare tire.
Exterior The gold Aztec paint on this 1969 GTO is sophisticated, elegant, and more than attention-grabbing.
This is, of course, the car's original color so it has an authentic look that matches the rest of GTO.
Gaps are just the way the factory did it, the bodywork is straight, and there is even an addition of Judge striping and emblem with a factory wing out back offsetting the signature hood scoop with dual scoops on either side of a prominent hood bulge extending rearward from the protruding nose.
A unique feature on our GTO was the body-color Endura front bumper.
It was designed to absorb impact without permanent deformation at low speeds.
Pontiac touted this feature heavily in advertising, showing hammering at the bumper to no discernible effect.
Concealed windshield wipers, which presented a cleaner appearance hidden below the rear edge of the hood, were standard on this GTO and another popular option it has is the hood-mounted tachometer, located in front of the windshield and lit for visibility at night.
Conclusion You just don't find many GTO's like this 196 GTO we have at Adventure Classics.
It runs and drives fantastic.
It is a matching-numbers 400 cubic inch V8 with a nice set of options, and that makes this GTO a very collectable car.
